#GetToKnow: Sofar Sounds Miami
Picture this: you and your friends can’t wait to catch your favorite local artist at some cafe-light peppered venue, you make your way to the front, packed like sardines with fellow music lovers. As the guitar strings fill the air and the lights dim, your vision is clouded with the square glow of various phone screens, camera flashes, and…did someone seriously bring an iPad? Above all the side conversations about yesterday’s hangover and next month’s regatta plans, you can barely hear the music let alone see it.
Sadly, that’s a common tale in today’s music world. It seems people are more concerned with being seen at concerts, rather than seeing the performances in front of them. How many times have you moved among a crowd because you can’t seem to tune out the murmurs? Thankfully, a group of like-minded music aficionados from North London joined together in 2009 to eliminate the white noise from concerts, and highlight the musicians at hand: Sofar Sounds.
Songs From a Room is the world’s largest live music discovery community; curating secret, intimate gigs in unique spaces all around the world. Bringing the magic back to live music. In over 100 cities, at anywhere from studio apartments to outdoor venues, these intimate live shows are BYOB, support local acts, and have one strict rule: No cellphones during the performance.
The best part? Their Miami branch was re-launched earlier this year and the city has really taken a bite out of it! They’ve held events at lofts and apartments throughout the city, plus cool venues like Artrageous Gallery and Share Squared. Local acts like My Deer, Brendan O’Hara, Deaf Poets, and Elastic Bond have all graced their carpet, and each performance is recorded for your nostalgic pleasure! Sign up on their site to receive the super secret information on their next monthly gig, and support uninterrupted music!
